10 must-read books for dog lovers

When the man found the dog

Konrad Lorenz, Tusquets Editores SA

Essay written in 1950 by one of the fathers of ethology. A very entertaining, personal view based on the author's experience with his own pets. A quick and entertaining read. It is a must-read classic.

In the mind of a dog

Alexandra Horowitz, RBA Libros SA

Written by a cognitive psychologist, this essay answers a question that comes up most of the time when we look into a dog's eyes: What is going through its mind? It explains, from a scientific point of view, without being overly technical, what a dog is, what it thinks, how it relates to the world around it and why it behaves the way it does. Very good.

The good dog book

Dr. Ian Dunbar, KNS Editions, SC

A clear and basic guide to the first steps in puppy training. It is not too long, has lots of pictures and is quite educational. A must for beginners and those who have forgotten what a four-legged baby is. Dr. Ian Dunbar is one of the greats in the world of canine training. He also has another excellent book, somewhat longer, entitled “A Puppy at Home”.

The clash of cultures

Jean Donaldson, KNS Editions, SC

It is difficult to choose just one book from all those on the market, but if I had to, I think it would be this one. Anyone who has a dog should read it carefully. A guide that helps us understand dogs and the problems that arise in their relationship with humans. It also offers a lot of information on canine education.

At the other end of the strap

Patricia B. McConnell, Sit Books, Vienna Editions

This book also talks about communication between humans and dogs. Highly recommended. Entertaining, close and clear, written from the heart, it is read in one sitting because it is so engaging. Written by a renowned zoologist, an expert in canine behavior. This author has just published another book, “For the Love of a Dog,” as good as this one.

Don't kill him... show him!

Karen Pryor, KNS Editions SA

Karen Pryor is one of the world's top animal trainers, famous for spreading clicker training and positive reinforcement techniques. This highly entertaining and educational book is a classic in the world of canine education. The author has also just published another exceptional book, "Learning and the Animal Mind." Both deserve to be in our library.

The language of dogs. Calming signals

Turid Rugaas, KNS Ediciones SA

Another classic of canine education. A short but very interesting book in which, in 50 pages, the author explains one of the main forms of communication of canines: calming signals. What they are, what they are for and how they are used. It will change the way you look at a dog.

Dominance Fact or fiction?

Barry Eaton, KNS Editions SA

I quote Turid Rugaas' words: “Congratulations to the author! Finally, a short, simple and clarifying book on such an important and misunderstood aspect of dog training. A highly recommended book.” I would have many people I see daily in my environment read it… and everyone who works with dogs.

Colors in the Wind

Jaime Vidal Guzmán (Santi), KNS Editions SA

This book is written by one of the leading exponents of positive dog training in our country. Focused on the training of detection dogs, Santi brings us closer to the world of working dogs in a friendly way, and also offers us the steps necessary to learn to work with our dog's sense of smell at home.

Dogs: a new interpretation of their origin, behaviour and evolution

Raymond and Lorna Coppinger, KNS Ediciones SA

The Coppingers present a scientific view of the origins of dogs, their breeds, the jobs they perform and how humans have influenced their evolution. An interesting overview, which focuses on the different groups of utility dogs that have evolved to perform specific tasks in cooperation with humans.
